The Last Fourth of July?
It’s our country’s birthday the Fourth of July
And I’m watching a million fireflies in the sky
A thousand people or so out on the church lawn
Celebrating the times that are now all but gone
Freedom to speak, to believe, and to pray
But how long will these last passed today?
Times are changing and I don’t like what I see
Without God’s grace, how can we be free?
Tonight we’ve forgotten a call to prayer
Not one Christian hymn was in our music fare
Yet our country is dying before our eyes
So why should it be such a great surprise?
God’s Word calls all Christians to humility
To pray for grace, not trust our own ability
Yet we are arrogant, proud, and sinful
And God’s wrath will be very vengeful
Unless, we, the people, get on our knees and pray
And humble our hearts for God’s will to obey
Our country is lost to us though we don’t know it yet
And the country that forgets God, God will also forget
